I played the snot out of it when the DEVOid/ Cars/ BeefItD2s/ Doo-ran/ WTFlocka Gullsheist "new wave" wusseez [img]tongue.gif[/img] would gather 'round ["Empire In the Sky, The Witch & the Priest," etc] - it, awa Yes, Kansas, Duke-awa pre-Duke Genesis, Brand X, Tull, Crimson, VMoore, Yngwie, Halen, Zep, Rush, ELP, MahavO/McLaugh, RTF, Al-D, Stan Clark, Ponty, Dregs, VI, & earlier Jrny was my retaliatory "tsunami" response to the deluge of corny, dopey, dippety-ditz, so-called "new wave" that was [poly-un-]saturating the airwaves ATT ["red-tide" was more like it!] ;-p... j/k, sort of....

I would've liked to've seen Randy Jackson w SS on tour w Jrny...now that would've been ineresting...a kickin cauc & kickin af-am boy...[& RJ prob would've slipped SS some fonK-grease]...;-) [img]cool.gif[/img]

...altho back to the immed topic at hand; I also actually prefer the crack from a thinner snare AW... a la StewC, NP, Weck's...but then everyone was using those because it was such a new, fresh, & cool sound [AOT all those yrs of those studio/ deep sn/ taped heads/ boxy sounds]; & then all of a sudden it wasn't "cool" anymore again for that very same reason [like everything else [img]graemlins/sure.gif[/img] , in cycles...i guess EVERYTHING is retro/ cool now... ;-p ]

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">YES...confusing really. After seeing Frank Briggs, there is no excuse for these top players to have dead sounding toms, or those that get squashed out by the other instruments.

My first thought would be to tune higher. Maybe it is habit of keeping your practice room or studio sound you're used to. Live, in a small venue, is a different matter.

His snare CRANKS however! Best ever I heard was opening gig for the Moonbabies tour at The Knitting Factory here in Hollyweird.

Ahhh, thanks for those Journey songs. It brings me back to the days when good music was popular, not lioke the crap that passes for music today (like Hip Hop, rap etc.) I also liked "Walks like a lady" from the Departure album. SS really showed his versatility in this bluesy song. Another good SS performance was on "I'm cryin'"
